We have had a busy week, so my blog is “stale” again, as my husband would say. However I have posted on his blog/Off grid website(genverters.com, shetland sheep can grow on you) last week keeping HIS from getting ” stale”. So now mine is stale, but his isn’t.

Today’s post is a mish mash of loose ends. Read the rest of this entry »

Let the Games Begin…

I am an Olympics nut. I have been since I was 12 years old in 19##. So I have been GLUED to the TV set this last week, in between homeschooling, dishes, errands, critters and church. Not much else is getting done. I’m squeezing in a post before the evening Olympics come on in a 1/2 hour. Names like Apollo Ohno, Lindsey Von, Shaun White, are household words here right now. As I watch with the kids, I reminisce about past Olympics and recall outstanding feats. Such as Jean Claude Killy winning 3 alpine skiing medals in 1968, the miracle US Hockey team winning the gold medal in 1980, etc, etc. They feign interest but really, they are thinking, “Mom’s being nostalgic again”, (and showing her age!).

I did see some “chicken olympics” the other day. A certain hen has discovered that llamas are warm. She has taken to roosting on them at night, and riding around on them during the day. My daughter has started feeding her on top of poor Sedro! She pecks and scratches around on top of him. He doesn’t even feel it. She gets a gold medal for “llama riding”, and llama jumping”, as she was hopping from llama to llama. Obviously she didn’t want to walk in the mud, as it is “mud season” around here. Unfortunately I didn’t have the camera handy so no pictures.

So, my husband is an Olympics widower till next weekend. He’ll have a reprieve for 2 years till the summer games.

Until next time…

IMG_2899I have been very busy lately so haven’t posted anything. My husband says my blog is “stale”. I guess in blog talk that means I haven’t posted anything lately and people will lose interest.

It is very cold here right now–6 degrees!!! In weather like this the old chickens suffer the most. Since Eric and Ondra won’t let us eat anyone, our place has turned into an unofficial chicken sanctuary and old chicken’s home. Read the rest of this entry »

Buckeye and Secrets of Chicken Salad

Buckeye-1My daughter has an unusual house pet. His name is Buckeye. She takes him everywhere with us in the car, to horse riding lessons, to the relatives, and even into Big R (the feed store). They love him in Big R. They get excited to see him. One of the clerks says, when he sees Buckeye, “Here comes the……Midget Chicken!!”. Because that is what he is. Buckeye is a chicken. A very small chicken. He is a Serama, which is the smallest chicken breed in the world. Ondra raises them….. in the house!!!, temporarily, for the last year. They are in cages of course, except for Buckeye. He rules the roost so to speak and has the privilege of running around the house….wearing a chicken diaper (you can find them on the internet). He was the first Serama chick hatched and Ondra oogles over him all day long. Every 2 minutes thoughout the day I hear, “He’s so cute!!!! Isn’t he the cutest thing in the world?!!!! Mom! look at Buckeye, you have to see this!!!! Isn’t he cute!!!!!!” He sits on her lap when she is doing school, and loves his wattles rubbed, and his breastbone messaged. He is quite the character and full of personality. Did I mention he purrs? Yes purrs, like a cat. When he was a chick, he would sit on Ondra’s shoulder and purr, and sometimes even break into a song. Meeting Mr. Right

Tuesday, was a stressful day for “the girls”. That is what I call my 2 adult ewes. This was the beginning of their big adventure. The day they met this year’s “Mr. Right”, who happens to be “Bluster” at Thistledown shetlands near Spokane. I don’t keep a ram, and don’t know if I ever want to keep a ram.

So I arrange a match for the girls every year. Last year I only had 1 ewe to breed and she was blessed to be bred to Donna’s ram Lewis. I bought my other ewe already bred.
The kids (Eric and Ondra) and I got up and left the house by 8:30 am. They were excited because they were getting out of school (we homeschool). Little did they know I was going to double up on it the next day HaHa. I didn’t though. Read the rest of this entry »
